Santorini, GR (JTR)

This post is dedicated to my dear friend Malgorzata Bida in Poland. Good luck next week!

Yia sou! "Health to you" in Greek. What an appropriate greeting. Greece is a healthy place overall. Fantastic climate, warm people, mind-boggling vistas, food you'll want to devour daily and local wine -- most of it never leaving the island of Santorini.

A Room with a View

Vallais Villas in Imerovigli are situated high above the sea with a plethora of amenities including expansive deck areas, eat-in kitchens (but going out is in), and traditional Greek decor. A quick relaxation after the beach to watch the sun set and then dinner on Santorini imparts the romance of Greek island living!

The best hotel in Oia...

Almost all of the hotels on Santorini have spectacular views. It's just that kind of place! If pampering is your thing for the holiday of a lifetime, Kaitikies is the destination for you.

And now,  FOOD:

For our first evening on Santorini, we opted for a small, romantic spot in Firostefani, a short walk and a village away from our hotel. Meet restaurant Vanilia:

Dimitris Stavroudis and Chef Vassilis Vergos, both of northern Greece, have created a five-star culinary oasis in Firostefani. The three-tiered bistro has a lovely terrace-top bar in high season: the more protected courtyard/bar and cozy interior are perfect in spring and autumn. Homemade pastas here are excellent, and all the specialties feature excellent local produce, beautifully presented.

Beaching it!

Swim at Red Beach, Dinner in Oia at 1800: After breakfast at your hotel, or in Fira, at Diverso or Batis (cafés on the main square), proceed to Red Beach, by caïque from near Akrotiri’s Fish Tavern Stolidas; in the evening, have dinner in Oia at 1800! [http://www.oia-1800.com/] But before you dine, viewing Oia's sunset is an absolute must (everyone does). A round of applause is heard as the sun disappears in the western sky.

Vlihada Beach

Our favorite volcanic beach on Santorini! A twenty minute scooter ride south of Fira. Careful driving here as roads wind sharply in spots.
Clear waters of the Aegean Sea
Taverna Limanaki @ Vlihada Beach where you can select your own live fish for lunch -- exquisite!

At Selene!
Modern Greek food with a sense of adventure. The restaurant is moving from Fira to the village of Pyrgos in 2010.

Next Destination:
ISTANBUL, TURKEY
